Sunday Night Frivolity

So I originally was going to write about obedience.  The Scout is obedient is the next law of scouting.  However, the church has been invaded by teenagers and youth workers and the scent of burnt hotdogs has permeated my Sanctum Santorum.  So, what’s a pastor to do?  If ya’ can’t beat ‘em join ‘em!

So the report from BRBC is this:

Mackenzie is trying to type her name just to let you know she is here.  Mn- that is her writing her name for you.  Of course, the cheetos crumbs will probably enhance my laptop’s functioning.

Rick is on his fourth hotdog and a monster mound of chips.  The heavy metal (Christian) music blaring in the youth room is definitely his doing. Janelle is feeling ill but is hanging in like a trooper-her hotdog remains untouched.

Melissa and Haley are trying hard to be cool and pulling it off rather well.  Ok-as well as they can at church.

Randy and Brandon have disappeared into the stratosphere, but since it just showered there are probably a whole bunch new bugs to capture and classify.

Vonna is in an ecstatic trance because she just won a free 44oz from Sonic.  She and Rick have begun to discuss the relative merits of Dr. Pepper vs. Cherry Limeade.

And then there is Mark, who is this evening’s guest chef.  The dogs were good, cooked to perfection, but he forgot that sizzling hotdogs and Styrofoam plates tend to meld together when placed in close proximity to each other.

I guess this is what the church growth gurus call “living in community”.  Down where I come from we call it “bustin’ up in the church together”.  Whatever you call it-it feels good.  To be with people you love, who you know (perhaps too well), and who share life with you.  I think this is how the early church did (read Acts 2).  I don’t think there was any preplanned, prepackaged fellowship programs-I think they just got together and did whatever came naturally.

Of course it’s because of the Lord Jesus Christ that we His beloved can have this type of fellowship.  Heaven is going to be a lot like this-hanging out, enjoying the Lord’s and each other’s company, eating-I just hope it isn’t hotdogs!

Share with me what you idea of fellowship looks like.

By the way-the picture of Captain America has no significance-Bruce was just cool!!

Sunday was Flag Day. That is why you choose the photo you did. Fellowship does not always invlove food, but food can be an important of fellowship. Fellowship can be hanging with those in the church family and doing what comes naturally. Hope the heavy metal band in not in my part of heaven.

MJ,
Thanks for the comment. I agree food isn't necessary for fellowship but makes it a heck of lot more fun (notice three points and alliteration). As for the heavy metal in heaven I don't know...It wouldn't be heaven for me (it would be the other place) if the music in heaven was country. T

It really is fun to have fellowship, and to have fellowship with the youth reminds me that we can have fun being Christians and living for Christ. Sometime we old folks (past the age of 30 if you ask the youth) get caught up in the everyday tasks of life that we forget that we are children ourselves; God's Children. As far as having fellowship in heaven, I can't wait till that moment. Oh the fun we will have!

A couple of things: First the line, "Bruce is just cool" is there because I originally had a picture of Bruce Lee but couldn't get it to download. I'm fully aware that Steve Rogers was the original Cappy. There is a new guy now, who is Bucky his side-kick who was frozen or something during WWII (please don't ask me how I know this). Secondly for Melissa, "Cool- is that ambiguous state that in which one attains a casual aloofness to all stimulus be it physical or mental". I made that up- two word define cool- Steve Mcqueen or James Dean or Elvis... Who do you guys think is cool. Please nobody say the Jonas Brothers!

Of course there will be heavy metal in heaven (country (cheating lying somebody done me wrong) is reserved for that other place)But the music will be worship and the fellowship will make it one big party

Those same topics which have been connected with country music are certainly found in heavy metal, and even worse. I think the point is that in heaven the focus will be what pleases, honors, and glorifies Him. I think God finds joy in the meaning and laughs at our tendency to get hung up on the style.

We are so often busy with a task or program that we miss the occasion to enjoy eachother's company. I would love if we had more opportunity to do just what the youth did Sunday night, gather together to simply kick back and do nothing together, or if we preferred share an activity or hobby (probably not hunting bugs), listen to music, whatever. Wouldn't it be great to just get together to pass time, simply being with our family in Christ who we love!

I think I agree with Kay. We should all get together more often to just chill and enjoy each others company. We all get caught up with the busyness of life and sometimes forget the simple things. We have enjoyed these youth fun nights and it gives me energy. Most of our fellowship times around our church does include food but that is just because we like to eat. :) Rick said once to me he didn't know who had more Potluck, the baptists or us nurses because we have a lot at work also. My enjoyment to these fun nights lie in the fact that the youth are together, having fun, staying out of trouble and we all get to learn a bit about each other. Friendships you make now can go on a long time. If fact I got a phone call today from a girl who I knew when I was that age. We hadn't talked since I moved away from New York and it was wonderful to catch up with her. We need to Value our friendships and take time to fellowship. Thanks Tom for joining us, it was great.
